Rare blue roan Dales Pony mare Lowkbers Foxglove,

known as Pagan.

Pagan is a rare blue roan Dales Pony who came to us in August 2009. She was bred by Charlie & Gina Parker of the Roandale Stud in County Durham, but carries their original Lowkbers prefix.

Pagan's dam, the blue roan mare Kilmond Jean, was sold to the Parkers by Maggie & Roger Tansley of the Maidendale Stud, to assist in their endeavours to save the almost extinct roan-colouration within the Dales breed. Kilmond Jean successfully produced 4 roan foals through her matings with the Parker's bay roan stallion Wharfedale Prince Regent. All roan Dales ponies existing today can trace their lineage back to these two ponies.

Pagan (and her half-brother King) were recently tested by the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory at the University of California and found to be heterozygous for the true/classic roan gene. They are the first Dales Ponies in the World to be tested for roan zygosity. Research in this field has proven that homozygosity for the roan gene is not lethal to unborn foals as had previously been believed.

Pagan has rare bloodlines but came to us with the reputation of being barren. Despite extensive (and costly) veterinary intervention we have not been able to sustain her pregnancies past 30 days, and we sadly cannot afford embryo transfer.

Pagan is broken to ride & drive and has participated in British Driving Society events with a former owner. We intend to use Pagan as a driving pony and hope to have lots of fun-filled years with her, even though she is unable to breed.
