Whole black Dales Pony stallion Thornville Pride, known as Wilf.
Licenced by the Dales Pony Society UK) and the Haras Nationaux (France)
Wilf is a Section A Dales Pony Stallion, licensed by the Dales Pony Society in the UK and the Haras Nationaux in France. He is a non-fading black, with no white markings whatsoever, and stands just under 14.1 HH. He is beautifully bred with traditional Wheatside bloodlines.
Wilf has correct conformation with 9 inches of bone and eye-catching paces. He has a very active walk and displays the powerful, elevated trot that is desired in the Dales breed.
Wilf is an extremely gentle and well-mannered stallion, who is an absolute joy to own in all respects. He is broken to ride & drive and has achieved show success in Private Driving and Trade Classes. He also worked commercially as a wedding-carriage pony and regularly completed endurance rides at distances up to 60km. Due to an injury sustained in a traffic accident (which was absolutely no fault of his own) Wilf is now fully retired to stud.
Wilf has sired nine purebred Dales Pony foals to date. His offspring are all black with no white markings to their legs. His first foal, Twywell Jaycee, is the winner of the Endurance GB Lindum Group Trophy 2011. Another son, Kingmaker Talisman, currently stands at stud for the President of the American Dales Pony Society at Raspotnik Farm in Wisconsin, USA.

Pedigree for Thornville Pride
Wilf's early history :
Wilf was bred by Tommy and June Sharp of County Durham. He is the only entire colt to have ever been released from the Wheatside Stud through almost a century of breeding. This fortunate opportunity arose when Mr Emerson of the Wheatside Stud generously allowed his close friend Tommy Sharp to select a Wheatside mare to become the foundation mare of the Thornville Stud. Tommy chose the beautiful mare Wheatside Lady Rose who subsequently proved to be pregnant and gave birth to a colt foal - Wilf.
Wilf was sold to us as a rising 4 year old because he was too closely related to Tommy & June's homebred mares to be used in their own breeding program.
At the time of our purchase, we were newcomers to the Dales breed, although Helen's grandfather had worked with these ponies during World War II and regularly sang their praises! We intended to geld Wilf and put him to work in a friend's carriage driving business, principally as a wedding & funeral pony. Timely intervention by Jo Ashby, the Secretary of the Dales Pony Society, who explained the importance of Wilf's bloodline, saved Wilf from gelding and led to the creation of the Kingmaker Dales Pony Stud - a decision we have never regretted!
The Wheatside Stud are credited as being one of just a handful of dedicated breeders who saved the Dales Pony from extinction in the lean years following World War II. Their influential stallion Wheatside Perfect (1956) who bears a striking resemblance to his great grandson Thornville Pride, can be found in every Dales Pony existing today. Perfect's dam, Wheatside Perfection (1940) was never beaten in the show ring throughout her entire life.
We are delighted to play a small part in maintaining this important bloodline in the Dales Ponies we breed at the Kingmaker Stud today.
