Akehurst Heather's Lass is the oldest mare at the Kingmaker Stud. She is 22 years old, but this year showed our younger mares just how a text-book foaling should be done.
Lass went into labour in the field at 6.30pm just as we were getting ready to bring her in to her foaling box for the night. We left her to foal outside and watched quietly from a distance so that she wasn't disturbed. She had a gentle, seemingly effortless foaling. From the appearance of the blue bag to the arrival of her foal took less than 5 minutes, and just a handful of strong pushes!
Lass' new foal is a beautiful jet black colt who we have named FLYNN de Kingmaker. He is a lively, healthy foal who stood unaided at just 15 minutes old, and was suckling strongly within half an hour of birth.
